Hess Contracting

Serving Lincoln and the surrounding communities for five years and counting, Hess Contracting takes a slightly different approach to business — and it shows in their rave customer reviews. At its helm is Jon Hess, owner and operator, whose passion for serving his neighbors with respect shines through in every project his team of three undertakes.

“The heartbeat of what we’re trying to do is that we’re really trying to take care of people and that allows us to be successful,” Jon explains. “It’s a slightly different approach from the initial goal of making a profit, but we talk a lot about whether or not we’re serving people with their requests.”

A Foundation of Faith and Service
For Jon, the decision to start his own contracting business was born out of a deep desire to serve both God and his community.

"I enjoy helping people, working with my hands, and bettering homes and communities," Jon shares. "It's ultimately grounded in loving God and our neighbors. We serve God by taking care of our neighbors well."

With a background in construction since his teenage years and experience working for a church, Jon's entrepreneurial path was guided by devout faith.

“I was on staff at a church for about seven years and helped with leading the youth and music ministry,” Jon recalls. “I moved to South Carolina for a few years to cut my teeth working for a company in the construction management world, and was baptized by fire. I learned as I went.

"When I came back to Lincoln, I decided to take the leap and start my own company," he continues. "I wanted to build a business that not only delivers exceptional results but also prioritizes communication, transparency, and honesty."

A Commitment to Caring
Specializing in home renovations — including entire homes, kitchens, basements, and baths — Hess Contracting can also help with specific projects such as tile work, flooring, and carpentry.  But what truly sets Hess Contracting apart from its competitors is its mission to serve people above all else.

This devotion to service extends to every aspect of the business, from transparent communication to meticulous attention to detail.

"We care, not just about the job, but about the people — our clients, our team, our subcontractors, and our families," Jon affirms. "Every decision we make is guided by our desire to serve others with integrity."

In an industry plagued by spotty communication and rising costs, Hess Contracting is also known for their reliability and transparency.

"Lack of communication is a huge hole in the construction industry," Jon acknowledges. "Many people struggle to even get a contractor to return their calls. We're committed to being responsive and transparent with our clients, even if it's not always what they want to hear and will do our best to get back to them within a few days.

“I’m also very blessed to have the guys with me that I do, because of their work ethic, honesty and commitment to quality and detail. They do a fantastic job and it makes my life easier knowing that I can trust what they’re doing, as well as how they’re doing it,” he adds.

Beyond the Business
Outside of work, Jon relishes time with his lively loved ones. Married to his wife Polly for almost a decade, the couple enjoy the fun of raising their three children: Lola (6), Jackson, a.ka. “JJ,” (3), and 5-month-old Judah.

"Family is extremely important to me," Jon shares. "We love watching Disney movies — both old and new — singing, dancing and listening to music, epic wrestling matches, playing soccer, football and basketball, and learning more about Jesus together."

Looking ahead, Jon sees a bright future for Hess Contracting. Despite facing challenges such as skyrocketing material costs and a dwindling labor force, Jon notes business is steady and he is always open to hiring the right fit. He also points out that the best time to do a major renovation after purchasing a property is ideally before the client moves in, for a variety of reasons: namely, money and convenience.

“We don’t have as many ‘content manipulation’ costs, such as covering/removing furniture, dust control, cleaning the whole site and tearing down our tools at the end of every day for those living in the home,” Jon concludes. “There’s also no major inconveniences for those living in the home with the water shut off or the power out, as well as ease of access — my team can have flexible hours and open space with a vacant home.

“Above all though, whether there are tenants in the home or not, we strive to be transparent with our timelines and the reality of the situation.”
