Teresa Couch

How many years have you been a realtor?
3yrs

What is your career volume as a realtor?
9.6 million

What was your total volume last year?
5.1 million

When did you start your career in real estate?
My real estate journey started in the summer of 2018 when I bought my first investment property at a sheriff sale. I watched way too much HGTV and thought I could be the next Joanna Gaines. I began reading, listening, and absorbing all things real estate and never stopped. Initially, flipping or investing was my focus, but as I became more involved, I found myself more interested in the things my real estate agent was doing.

What did you do before you became a realtor?
I was an RN for 14 years. I have always enjoyed caring for others, now I get to do it in a different way.

What are you passionate about right now in your business?
I’m really passionate about great marketing. It has been a great creative outlet for my aesthetic personality.

What has been the most rewarding part of your business?
Buying and selling can be stressful and overwhelming. The most rewarding part of my job is making people feel taken care of and appreciated. Not just during the transaction but before and after as well.

What was your biggest challenge as a realtor?
TRUST. While working as an RN, I never had to work very hard to earn someone’s trust. As a real estate agent, I have to build trust from the ground up. This is why I love referrals. Referrals come with a foundation of trust at its core and allows potential clients to feel connected to my purpose from day one. The purpose of taking care of their best interest and advocating their needs.

How does real estate fit into your dreams and goals?
I feel that real estate connects to a collective dream: the American Dream, which is SUPER cliché, I know! But it’s true! I didn’t really understand that until I became an agent. We all want to have some say or control over the quality of our lives. To me, real estate can help build wealth, contribute to improving a neighborhood, allow you to express your creativity through design or gardening, and most importantly, home provides solace when you need it most.

What’s your favorite part of being a realtor?
The entrepreneurship. It is never boring! There is always something new to learn, people to engage with, and experiences to share. The possibilities of where I could take this career are endless.

Define success.
Success is doing work that both fills you up and helps others.

Tell us about your family.
I have three children: two girls, ages 12 and 10, and my son, who is 8. I met my husband 22 years ago at Holy Cross College and will be married for 18 years this summer.

Favorite books?
I’m a self-help junkie so non-fiction is my jam. Anything by Ryan Holiday, Jen Sincero, Brene Brown, Eckhart Tolle, Napoleon Hill, the list goes on. I can’t pick just one.

Are there any charities or organizations you support?
I LOVE supporting local businesses. Particularly women owned business. I feel good knowing I helping to put food on the table for someone who lives where I live. Ask anyone who knows me, I can point you in the direction of all the best local places.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of the business?
Art and music have always had a place in my heart. They both light me up in a way few things can. I also love being outside. RV camping has found its way into my life in the last few years. With having littles at home, it has helped us make some fantastic memories.

Given your status and expertise, what is some advice you would give the up-and-coming top producer?
Persist. When you think you have lost or failed, persist. The road is not straight and it will sometimes take you back before you can go forward.

In closing, is there anything else you would like to communicate using this Michiana Real Producer platform?
I am so thankful for the friendships and connections I have developed in the past few years. I have received some great advice, encouragement, and support from a number of people in the industry. Thank you to all who have given me a pat on the back, helped me navigate a tough transaction, or gave me grace when I couldn’t give it to myself.
