Mario Greco
Setting a New Bar

There are many ex-lawyers in our business,” says REALTORⓇ and former lawyer, Mario Greco of the MG Group. “Practicing law is good training for learning not only how to advocate for clients, but to do so carefully and effectively.”
Mario Greco’s journey from practicing law to becoming a highly respected real estate professional is a story of transformation, resilience, and entrepreneurial vision. Born to Italian immigrant parents, Mario grew up with a strong sense of family values and the importance of hard work. His father, a Chicago Public Schools teacher, juggled teaching in the classroom with teaching driver’s education in the afternoons and English as a second language at night, all while running a successful side business too. Despite this intense schedule, he always attended Mario’s school and athletic events.
“Looking back, I realize how much my dad’s work ethic influenced me,” Mario shares. “He showed me the power of pursuing opportunities beyond the nine-to-five.”
Upon entering Northwestern University, Mario initially pursued pre-med studies before pivoting to chemical and environmental engineering. But ultimately, he found his way to law school.
“As the eldest son of immigrants, the expectations were clear: I was going to become a lawyer or a doctor,” he says, laughing.
Mario practiced law in Chicago during the late 1990s and early 2000s. While his law career provided structure and stability, it didn’t ignite his passion, and eventually, he became jaded.
“Each firm I joined felt the same,” Mario explains. “It was the same stuff, just different people. I wanted something more fulfilling—something where I could use my skills to make a tangible impact.”
“I wanted to decide how I spent my time, where I spent it, and to focus on what I’m good at: interacting with people and advocating for them,” he adds.
A chance encounter with Brad Lippitz, another former lawyer-turned-REALTORⓇ, planted the seed for his career change. Intrigued by Lippitz’s success and inspired by the possibilities real estate offered, Mario began exploring the field while still working full-time as an attorney. In January 2002, Mario obtained his real estate license. By September of that same year, he’d not only closed $8 million in sales, but also left the law behind entirely.
“I took a leap of faith, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Mario says.
Despite his strong start, Mario faced his share of challenges. Transitioning to self-employment required that he overcome a deeply ingrained risk-averse mindset instilled during his upbringing.
“My family valued stability,” Mario explains. “Entrepreneurship was a departure from everything I’d been taught.”
His legal background proved to be an asset in his new career. “Practicing law taught me how to advocate and negotiate effectively,” he says. “Those skills translated seamlessly into real estate.”
Ambitious from day one, Mario not only honed his craft, expanded his client base far beyond his immediate network, and built a reputation for professionalism, but he also started MG Group within months of becoming a full-time REALTORⓇ. Today, MG Group is one of Chicago’s premier real estate teams, known for its expertise, professionalism, and client-first approach. With over 200 years of combined experience among its members, the team prides itself on navigating complex transactions and market shifts with ease.
Because of Mario’s background in a non-real estate industry, he has always sought people with unique perspectives when building his team. For example, the MG Group includes three lawyers, two MBAs, and even a wine sommelier.
“Our success lies in our diverse backgrounds and shared commitment to excellence,” Mario affirms.
Beyond real estate, Mario is deeply involved in his community. He’s passionate about fostering connections and mentoring new agents.
“I want to share my experiences to help others grow,” Mario says. “The more we support one another, the stronger our industry becomes.”
Mario’s dedication to his career is matched only by his commitment to his family. He and his wife, Jacqueline, live in West Town with their five-year-old son, Luca. Whether it’s building LEGO creations, exploring the outdoors, or planning family trips, the Grecos cherish their time together. This summer, Mario and Jacqueline are excited to introduce Luca to his Italian heritage with his first trip to Italy and abroad.
Mario prioritizes balancing his time between work and his personal life: “Family is everything,” he says. “They keep me grounded and remind me of what’s truly important.”
To maintain this work-life harmony, his ultimate goal is to build a self-sustaining brokerage that thrives independently of his daily involvement and whose stellar reputation outlasts his career.
“I want MG Group to continue to be synonymous with exceptional service and expertise long after I’ve removed myself from the day-to-day operation,” Mario says. “My goal is to create something that endures.”
“Success isn’t just about numbers,” he adds. “It’s about personal growth, making connections, and leaving a legacy that inspires others.
