Mark VanderWal
Tech Entrepreneur To House Hustler
Mark VanderWal has quickly become a standout in the real estate industry. An agent and marketing specialist at eXp Realty, he has a career volume of $19 million — over $9 million of which was obtained in 2023. His pathway to success, however, has been anything but conventional.
Mark’s career in real estate began under unique circumstances. “My wife’s company closed, and she became disabled with severe vertigo symptoms,” Mark recalled. “Despite her disability, she was determined to work and decided to get her real estate license. We knew she couldn’t handle all the computer work, so I agreed to get my license and handle all the paperwork.”
Before entering into real estate, Mark spent two decades in the technology industry, including a stint in the film industry and a decade as the president of a digital learning company. He even executive-produced a $3.5 million film in Michigan. Three years ago, Mark turned 50 and decided it was time for a change. “I sold my shares in my company and resigned as president in December of 2021, and began full time in real estate on January 1, 2022,” he said.
Mark’s dedication and expertise quickly earned him recognition. He achieved the eXp Realty ICON status, placing him in the top 2% of agents at his brokerage. He also ranks in the top 5% of REALTORS® in Michigan and was named one of the Top 200 REALTORS® in 2023. Mark was honored as a Grand Rapids Magazine Real Estate All-Star in 2024 as well. “It has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the recognition,” he said.
Mark attributes much of his success to his dedicated team. “My designer, Kristi DenHartigh, helps get every listing market-ready. My assistant, Amaru Lombardi, supports client relations and marketing. Glenna Novack, my transaction coordinator, keeps everything on track, and Rick Baker, my house prep specialist, ensures that our listings look their best,” he said. “We work together seamlessly to provide the best service possible.”
For Mark, real estate is a way to create meaningful and lifelong relationships with others by helping them successfully navigate their real estate endeavors. His wife, Heidi, has been his biggest influence. “Her ability to stay positive, rely on her faith, and grow stronger through adversity has changed the course of my life,” Mark shared. “She has always supported me, encouraged me, and lifted me up — even during the most difficult times.”
Mark’s passion for real estate extends beyond just closing deals, however: He also loves surprising and delighting his clients. “Whether it’s a personalized welcome package or a surprise food delivery, I want to make their journey unforgettable,” he shared. Mark believes in adding value at every touchpoint, turning clients into lifelong friends.
Like many agents, Mark admits that navigating the ever-changing real estate market has been sometimes challenging. “Keeping up with technological advancements, shifting consumer preferences, and economic fluctuations require constant learning,” he said. Mark invests time and resources into staying informed, attending industry conferences, and networking with the local group of Grand Rapids eXp Realty agents. “I’ve embraced social media and videos to streamline processes and enhance the client experience,” he added.
When it comes to Mark’s dreams of the future, real estate is at the heart of it. “I want to become a leading listing expert by setting the industry standard with exclusive services and unparalleled value that no one else offers. I also dream of mentoring the next wave of real estate rock stars,” he explained. Mark is additionally passionate about building a community where agents lift each other up and celebrate successes together.
Mark’s family is his cornerstone. He and his wife, Heidi, have been married for 28 years and have three adult children — Crew, McGuire, and Preslie. “Family provides me with love, support, and purpose,” Mark said. He is also a fitness fanatic, avid runner, and triathlete. “Fitness keeps me disciplined and healthy, and I plan to keep improving — even at 53,” he shared.
Mark’s faith in Jesus Christ is a guiding force in his life. “This is the Lord’s business,” he said. “My faith inspires me to strive for excellence, live a life of meaning, and serve others with compassion and integrity.”
Ultimately, Mark wants to be remembered for making a positive impact. “Whether it’s through providing exceptional service to clients, doing continuous improvement in my business practices, or giving back to my community, everything I do is driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference,” he shared.
For up-and-coming agents, Mark emphasizes the importance of building genuine relationships and providing value. “Trust and authenticity are invaluable assets,” he said. “Take the time to understand your clients’ needs, listen attentively, and go above and beyond to exceed their expectations.”
