“It’s never too late to pursue a new career!” says Heather Boyd.
Heather is an accomplished and long-time surgical assistant, and she worked for years with oral surgeons at OMSA. She assisted seven doctors both in the clinic and hospital settings, where “patient care was my top priority.”
While she loved her job, she was always drawn to real estate. “I would actually drive around to different areas just looking at homes in my free time.” But she found it exceedingly difficult to make that move to real estate while working her full-time job and taking care of her four kids — Kylee (26), Jake (22), Bella (14) and Hunter (13).
“Honestly,” she says, “having a mandated 10 days of home quarantine due to COVID-19 became a blessing in disguise.” She finally had the time to complete the entire series of coursework and was able to take the exam on her first day out of quarantine. She was licensed in October of 2020 and began actively working in real estate in January of 2021.
Oddly enough, the original decision to not go into real estate was for her kids. Then the decision to finally make the jump was also for her kids. “Behind everything I do, whether in real estate or life in general, it is for my children.” She just had to wait for the right time. That took a measure of resilience and selflessness.
She learned that from her mother. “My mom is my hero and the one I always looked up to,” says Heather. “Becoming a mother myself changed the way that I looked at the world and gave me a bigger purpose.”
And that bigger purpose has now pursued her into real estate. “I’ve become focused on giving my clients peace of mind throughout the selling and buying process,” she says. “Being part of such a huge milestone in people’s lives is an honor, and I will never take the trust that is placed in me for granted. “
Heather believes that it’s truly paramount for her clients to feel important, to feel that her entire focus is on them. “I strive to ensure that each person I work with is given time to express their wants and needs, as well as the undivided attention that they deserve.”
“As I get further into my career and my children get older, I see so much opportunity to grow my business,” says Heather. She still can’t get over the joy she derives from her transition to real estate. “Choosing to change career paths to become a REALTOR® has been the most rewarding decision I have made.”
She knows there are so many others out there who feel the pull toward a career change. Heather has gone through the concerns, the weighing of the pros and the cons, the eventual learning curve.
“To anyone who is considering entering the real estate field or just changing careers in general,” Heather says, “just know that you can succeed if you put in the work and fully commit yourself.”
