Matthew and his dad, Ted Resnick.
Matthew Resnick knows success doesn’t come through dumb luck, nor does it grow on trees, it comes from focus, tenacity and hard work. Prior to his venture into real estate, he’d successfully grown his father’s jewelry business by dedicating himself to the process, by understanding the business, by making himself an expert. Having now applied this same approach to real estate, it’s no surprise he’s become one of the premiere agents in the region, and the best part is, he was able to keep it a family affair.
In 1979, when Matthew was approximately 4 years old, his family moved from New Jersey to Kerrville, Texas, where he spent his youth outdoors, excelling on the tennis courts, golfing, and hunting on the family ranch. From an early age, Matthew also began to grasp what it meant to run a business and be an entrepreneur by working at his father’s fine jewelry store.
“The family joke is that the first thing you learn working with dad is how to take out the trash,” said Matthew with a chuckle during an interview.
During high school, more afternoons than not were spent at the store where Matthew began by organizing the cases and cleaning the merchandise before graduating to repairs and battery replacement. For the next 17 years, he grew the business and built customer relationships to the point where he was able to open a second location completely of his own… but it was never his passion.
Matthew got his first taste of real estate when he bought his first house after searching through the newspaper for someone that offered seller financing, at which point he was able to buy a home for basically no money down. He then remodeled, rented for a time, and sold it for profit. The bug had bitten.
When Matthew and his wife, Catherine, an interior designer with a keen eye for the aesthetically pleasing, bought, remodeled, and flipped their first home, the itch was only further scratched. Eventually, the excitement of the process and the joy of working with his wife won Matthew over, and after a positive conversation with his father in 2005, he decided to make the transition and pursue his passion in real estate full-time. By 2006 he’d received his license.
“It was scary the first year or two,” he admits, “I’d just assumed that clients from the jewelry store would follow me over to real estate, but that wasn’t the case.”
In 2008, as the market was under strain, Matthew got his break. As many began jumping ship, Matthew’s history of dedication and perseverance saw him stay the course and soon enough homeowners were turning to him for solutions. From there, business took off.
“I’ve always put my clients first and come from a place of service,” he said, “because at the end of the day, it’s not about me.”
Matthew’s other piece of advice is that no matter what you do, you should strive to become an expert.
“You have to know your market,” he advises, “when it comes to the areas I serve, I’m an expert, and confidence comes from being an expert.”
By attending open houses and visiting the physical properties in his regions before running his own analyses, Matthew was able to gain a deep understanding of market stats and follow trends. He made himself an expert, and thereby one of the most sought after agents.
Matthew’s nearly two decades worth of sales and marketing experience, as well as his ability to dedicate himself to a craft, have continued to mesh well with Catherine’s interior eye. Furthermore, Catherine’s brother is a home builder, and the three together have created the perfect trifecta.
“We work incredibly well together,” says Matthew, then starts to laugh, “when we stay in our own lanes.”
Matthew and Catherine have also raised two incredible children. Their son, Grant, is a junior at Texas Tech where he studies energy commerce. Hanley, their daughter, just graduated with a marketing degree that Matthew hopes she’ll apply to real estate though her current calling seems to be in fashion, but still, Matthew keeps his fingers crossed!
As a family man, perhaps what makes Matthew such an impactful agent is also his understanding of what a home really is. In a quote posted to his agency’s website, Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty, Matthew says, “Homes are a collection of our life experiences. They are iconic reflections of our lives that evoke memories, define who we are, remind us of where we come from and the people we have shared our lives with.”
Since his formative years, Matthew’s trajectory and experience has centered around his ability to become an expert, putting in countless hours with jewelry, then with real estate, but always and most importantly, with his family. From overtaking his father’s ambitions to finding true joy working alongside his wife, success has come in the wake of the confluence of experience and love, in the wake of passion. The same passion he pours into all his projects because he knows what all his clients know deep down, that buying and selling a home is about more than us- it’s about our loved ones, our pasts, presents, and our beautiful futures.
