Helpful tips for success in your fitness journey

•Being present in your fitness journey•
-What I’ve learned about people in my time personal training is that they struggle to be present. They are always either stuck in how they used to look or how they want to look. Both can be detrimental.  A lot of times we try to do too much too fast trying to chase that end result. And that’s where it’s dangerous to our to your fitness goals. If we’re so focused on the past or the future how can we lock in on the daily tasks in front of us?  How can we sustain the goals we set out for ourselves? What if I told you that focusing on the number on a scale or a desired look may not be the right focus? Allow me to redirect your focus.

•Small attainable goals•
-First and foremost having a realistic goal is crucial. Something like “I would like to lose 20lbs and sustain having it off this year.” Opposed to “I want to lose 20lbs of body fat and have a 6 pack in 2 months.” Once you have your realistic goal you can now structure small attainable goals that will lead you to that overall goal. Having small attainable goals is key building discipline and consistency.

•Self monitoring•
Having a daily checklist of things visibly in front of you helps. When we can focus on the day we are on and break it down to checking off some boxes daily we can have momentum. Scheduling your workouts even with the mindset of “subject to change” still allows you to make it a priority. Scheduling self-care time allows you to make it a priority. Just the action of scheduling and checking off your boxes gives you some sense of control in your journey. Keeping logs during your workouts helps a ton. Recording your weights after lifts and being able to look at your prior lifts will help you progress and stay engaged in what you are doing.

•Controlling the controllable•
I’m big on controlling the things you can control and letting go of the things you cannot. In our health and fitness journey, we are always gonna have what we call “Barriers” things that life throws at us to get in the way of our plans. You may not be able to control being held over at work so don’t stress it, but you sure control finding a solution and getting that meal in or adjusting your gym time. Maybe you couldn’t train at all that day, fine but can we not find more time later in the week to make it up? It all comes down to your will in the things you can control and accepting that it’s great to have a plan. We need to allow ourselves room to adjust to life without guilt or stress over it.

•Be resilient•
Once we can accept that we only control laying out the plan on paper but life will have its own plans,The better we can become at being resilient with our health and fitness. Being resilient allows you to take on these barriers with the ability to control your emotions in times when you may start to feel frustration or defeat. It allows you to give yourself grace and a reframed mindset of “it still gets done” because, at the end of the day, that’s all that matters as you manage your health and fitness.

•The best plan is the one you can adhere to•
People overthink and complicate things when it comes to health and fitness and that’s just due to the amount of information available to us. The many different ways to do things we see on social media etc. When it’s as simple as what can you realistically adhere to and what are you realistically willing to adhere to in your day-to-day life.
