Roxane Mellor
Roxane Mellor is a woman of many talents and varied experiences, but across industries and companies, she’s specialized in helping people achieve their financial and homeownership dreams.
Her professional career began in Boston in 1975 when she was 17 years old. She started working for a small brokerage firm that dealt in stocks and bonds, first in administration, then as a trader. That experience sparked a lifelong interest in financial services.
Three years later, she co-founded a boutique broker-dealer specializing in oil and gas investments, ECM Securities, Inc.
Her business savvy and her knack for financial services kept her in the industry. Eighteen years later, in 1995, she went to work for a different financial services firm known then as Dean Witter. As a financial services representative and stock broker, Roxane worked her way up at the firm — and then when it was acquired by Morgan Stanley, she became a VP of Morgan Stanley Financial Services.
“It was one of my proudest professional moments,” she said.
But her rise to the top didn’t stop there. In 2003, Roxane and her husband (also in financial services) formed their own SEC broker-dealer called Spoonhill Asset Management, where she served as Chief Financial and Compliance Principal of the firm, which catered to global banks, private banks, and family offices.
As things wound down at Spoonhill, Roxane started to think about a different next move for herself — one that tapped into a lifelong interest in real estate and design.
“When I was in the financial services business, one of my target markets was realtors,” Roxane said. “I would go into real estate firms and give presentations on retirement planning.”
Her magnetic personality endeared her to the realtors she worked with. Roxane found herself meeting them at open houses and talking design.
“I’ve always loved interior design, so when we closed our two-floor Boston office, I had all this furniture in my basement. So, I thought, why not start staging people’s homes.”
Spoonhill Designs was born. Her first foray into real estate work was in staging, but Roxane puts both feet into everything she does.
In 2012, she earned her realtor’s license, and called her realtor she had previously worked with and admired greatly.
“She said to me, ‘Roxane, you got your license? You have to come into my office and meet with our manager—tomorrow.’”
The very next day, Roxane was hanging her license in Coldwell Banker’s Sudbury office.
“Real estate is very personal. My background in financial and retirement planning helped set me up for conversations where you talk with people about their life and future, and real estate really mirrors that.”
“I like to develop a personal relationship with people before business,” she said. “This industry is all about trust and your clients need to know that their agent has their best interest at heart.”
Even within the wide world of real estate, Roxane has found a niche and thrived: After her mentor at Coldwell Banker asked her to join her ‘listing agent team’ for a new subdivision in Sudbury, Roxane fell in love with new construction, which represents a large part of her business today.
“I love helping people put each piece of the puzzle together to make their dream home.”
From financial planning to real estate, Roxane has spent the bulk of her professional life helping people achieve their goals and dreams.
Now, as a Senior VP for Compass, working out of their Hingham office, Roxane gets to tie together her love of home design and her business savvy to continue propelling people on their path to homeownership.
In her spare time, Roxane loves to garden, cook and entertain. She loves dogs, and can be spotted driving around Cohasset Village with her two Golden Retrievers in tow, Summer Breeze and Mr. Ben.
Nantucket has always held a special place in her heart as it was her mom’s favorite birthday spot. After getting married on the island 26 years ago, she finds that living in Cohasset gives her the best of both worlds: incredibly beautiful oceanside living and a heartfelt and supportive community to call home.
And she’s modest, crediting lots of her success to mentors.
“I owe so much to two people that saw my potential and literally took me under their wings,” she said. My co-founding partner at ECM Securities, Bill Mason, who honed my communication skills with investors and taught me how to run a business, and my mentor at Coldwell Banker in Sudbury, Sue Sirota, who shared with me all there is to know about real estate. I now pay it forward at every opportunity.”
“My passion is real estate, it’s so rewarding, it doesn’t even feel like work,” she said. “I’m just incredibly thankful.”
