John Overfield

Built on Experience

As Maya Angelou said, “People don't remember what you do as much as how you make them feel.” This quote is of particular importance to John Overfield of Coltrane & Overfield. While John is a real estate attorney, his primary focus is building relationships and caring for those he has the pleasure of serving.

“I’ve been doing residential and commercial real estate law for 29 years—since 1995. Over that period of time, I've been in almost every kind of scenario one can imagine as far as issues that might come up in a real estate transaction,” John explains. “From that, I've learned a great deal about how to handle situations that arise, how to keep a title problem from causing a transaction to fall apart, how to spot issues early in a process, and how to avoid crises. There is wisdom and practical experience that comes from having that many transactions.

“And the thing I’ve learned more than anything,” continues John, “is that we have to care for people and the transaction. The relationships matter.”

When John began his career in the mid-90s, he was tasked with building a business from the ground up. No one gave him a book of business or leads. So, he set out to build a business by developing deep and meaningful relationships with REALTORS®. In the 29 years since, those relationships have carried him to continued success, allowing him to oversee the closing of countless transitions.

John’s work is distinguished by the loyal relationships he’s developed with clients and partners. He enjoys educating, counseling, and working with human psychology. John deeply appreciates the vulnerability of clients who are willing to ask questions and is committed to patiently extending support.

John encourages REALTORS® to build connections with multiple attorneys. This is especially important when representing the seller because the buyer typically selects the attorney for a transaction. Having strong relationships increases the likelihood of a smooth transaction.

While John practiced litigation and corporate law earlier in his career, he naturally gravitated toward real estate. He particularly enjoys the opportunity to create a win-win situation for clients.

“I enjoy real estate because, at the end of the day, when the transaction is complete, and the deed is recorded, in most situations, everybody walks away happy—as opposed to family law where there is a divorce or criminal law where there is a prison term. In this transaction, everyone wins. It's a more positive, happy experience. Of course, there are exceptions to that rule, but that’s what I find,” John shares.

Testimonials

“I have been using John for almost my entire decade in the business, and each closing our clients and I have with John is always so smooth and seamless when it comes to his knowledge and experience as a real estate attorney. He is always happy to spend extra time answering any questions or resolving issues. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to provide clients with answers quickly, accurately, and thoroughly. He makes sure people understand their options and gives advice accordingly. A memorable trait/experience of John's, aside from his knowledge in the field, is his sense of style. He always walks in with his notorious suspenders, dapper bow ties, and his coffee mug. He is dependable, thorough, and, overall, a genuine person whom I also consider a friend.”
