It is sad, really. Four letters that capture how the average person feels in the American workplace…TGIF or ‘Thank God it’s Friday’. I get it. I just strongly disagree with it. This is operating off the assumption that Monday through Thursday are days that we simply survive. A study was recently released by Forbes that stated “70% of American employees hate their jobs.” Don’t believe that stat? I would simply challenge you to ask 10 of your friends how they feel about their current job.

However, I am writing this to the top producing real estate agents in Indianapolis. There may be tough days but the reason you are a top producer is because you see each day as an opportunity. You attack the hardest thing right out of the gate. You welcome challenges because without them…you would be BORED to death. Overcoming obstacles is what separates the hitters from the quitters.

Fact: 2 out of the 3 real estate agents that launch out of training this year will quit within 12 months. The real tragedy of that stat is that most of the quitters will go back to working for the man. Which is why we have songs like Everybody’s Working for the Weekend by Loverboy.

The writer of the song, Paul Dan, explains the origin of the song:

"That one was originally, 'Everybody's Waiting for the Weekend.' I was walking down close to where I was living. It was a Wednesday afternoon, beautiful afternoon, and I'm walking in this heavily populated area, and it was deserted. Everybody was at work. And me being the musician, I'm out working and my work is, okay, what am I going to do for inspiration and where can I find it? So I'm out on the beach and wondering, 'Where is everybody? Well, I guess they're all waiting for the weekend.’"

The fact that they changed it to “working” for the weekend is interesting to me. This song suggests that the best times in our lives are experienced on the weekend or outside the workplace. Don’t get me wrong, I love a little R&R and spending time with family. But when it’s time to engage in the business again, I get excited. There is so much opportunity for growth and so much opportunity to experience LIFE on a Monday or Tuesday for that matter.

Friday represents the end of work and the beginning of play. Most of us say we operate under a “work hard, play hard” mentality, but do we really? Are we just as psyched to start the week as we are to end it? If so, there is a new phrase we should operate under: Thank God it’s Monday!
